Consider the following case study:
Setting: Brian is a manager at a large manufacturing plant that makes cardboard containers for all sizes of products. He has 40 workers in his division, and they represent a wide variety of ethnic groups. Some have relocated from other countries and do not yet speak English well. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hostility among the groups.
This particular plant shuts down for a half-hour lunch break. During this time workers stay with their own ethnic group, and there is little communication with the other groups. What does occur is often negative, like bumping someone else or making rude remarks about people in another group.
Brian wants to reduce hostility and instigate a feeling that all the workers are part of a team. More relaxed communication should improve productivity and increase the helpfulness to one another that’s necessary to make the work run smoothly. He needs to accomplish this in part for his supervisor, who wants to see results “yesterday.”
Question: How can Brian use humor to achieve positive results? Already, people are annoyed by other groups’ laughter and usually assume the laughter is directed at them.
