After watching Madonna’s 1984 music video, “Material Girl,” respond to the following:
In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Howard Hawks, 1953), Marilyn Monroe’s performance in the “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” number is memorable. Discuss Madonna’s response and appropriation of this famous musical number. Is this musical number “problematic,” in terms of sexual politics? Or, in what ways Monroe’s performance can be viewed as “progressive”?
