Reflection Paper #1
One of the mainstays of this course is the reflection paper every module. Reflection papers are brief writing assignments that ask you to compare readings for that module and reflect on how the readings approach different components of the research and writing process. These papers are not summaries of the reading or your general thoughts on the topic, but rather specific, concise comparisons and critiques of the readings as related to the focus of the module.
Activity:
Read the following articles, then respond to the prompt with a MAXIMUM 500-word reflection:
Special Education and Individualized Academic Growth (Hurwitz et al., 2020)
Special Education: A Service, Not a Sentence (Schwarz, 2007)
As you read these articles, take notes on the following questions:
Both articles talk about special education, but they approach the topic differently. In what ways do they approach the topic differently?
Describe and compare how each article uses references.
Describe and compare how each article uses data.
Describe and compare the writing style of each article.
The Hurwitz article is an example of a peer-reviewed article and the Schwarz article is an example of an article that is not peer-reviewed. Summarize the main differences you see between these types of articles. What are your main takeaways from this comparison?
