In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce?

Instructions: There are two questions (yes, you must answer both of them), each worth 50 points, for a total of 100 points possible on this final exam. Your answers should be at least 1500 words. The question is comprehensive and spelling and grammar do count, so try to be as accurate as you can and make use of your spelling and grammar check functions in your word processor.
Question 1
You are having a historic dinner party and have room to invite 6 people besides yourself. What six people, of all you have read about in this course, would you invite to your party? Who would you seat next to whom? What would they discuss? What would they argue about? What would they agree upon, and why? What would you say to them? And why is this dinner conversation so important, what would it tell the casual observer about the history of our world from the 18th century on? No fair just listening in, remember you are the host, and a good host stimulates conversation among his/her guests. Time frames do not matter when drawing up your guest list, ie: you are free to invite Benjamin Franklin and seat him between Hitler and Charles Darwin. Please make certain you invite folks from different time periods and different countries, and please invite at least one woman (more if you dare!) Good Luck and Have Fun.
Question 2
In the movie, the Third Man (1949), the character Harry Lime, played by Orson Wells, says:
“… in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”
Lime seems to be saying that terror, trouble, wars, and unrest tend to engender great advances in art, science, culture and society, while peace and prosperity bring civilization little gain. Do you agree or disagree? Be sure to back up your opinion with facts and information you have gleaned from both Speilvogel and Wiesner during the course of History 102. If Harry Lime had lived through the years from 1949 to present, do you think his opinion would be different? Why or why not. Again remember to back up your opinions with the information you have studied during this entire course.
