How do these mechanisms contradict the overarching goals of the juvenile justice system?
This week we focused on the jurisdictional boundaries (or lack thereof) for juveniles during waiver proceedings. Throughout this week, we saw how juvenile court jurisdiction in the United States takes on a variety of forms and interacts in a variety of ways with the criminal system. What are the major mechanisms to move a juvenile from the juvenile system to the criminal system? How are they different from one another? What are some of the consequences to having juveniles handled outside of the system that was created and designed for their needs? How do these mechanisms contradict the overarching goals of the juvenile justice system?
