A gig worker is a freelancer or an independent contractor who works temporary jobs, usually within the service sector. The service sector is a tier in the US economy in which there is an exchange of intangible goods, which are services, for currency. An example of this exchange is uber, contract work, housekeeping, Though some of this growth is attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw an increase in the necessity of home-delivery of goods and layoffs, it is clear that gig work is a strong contender in today’s economy, and for good reason. The first reason why gig work is such an attractive option for prospective employees is the level of independence it accompanies. Gig work also allows flexibility in hours that would not be available in a typical job, and has a low training threshold. Some cons to gig work are that there are no benefits, like health insurance or 401k. Assignment: Find someone who does freelance/gig work, and preferably, who has also worked a traditional job.
