describe the use of the developmental sequence for throwing, the Observation Plan for Throwing, and the Record Sheet.

Purpose: To gain experience in assessing the developmental levels of strikers. There are many forms of striking. The striking motion can be made overhead, sidearm, or underarm (as in the golf swing). Contact with the object can be made with the hand or with an implement, and an implement can have a short handle or a long handle. Striking tasks in sport must sometimes conform to rules governing the striking implement, the position of the striker, or the striker’s movement—for example, staying behind a restraining line.
The ballistic skills share many principles of stability and motion; this is particularly true of the striking skills. In this lab, you will observe sidearm striking. (Keep in mind that you can adapt the tools used here to observe other types of striking. In fact, the foot action, trunk action, and upper arm action sequences for striking are the same as for throwing.)
In Lab Activity 6.1, we describe the use of the developmental sequence for throwing, the Observation Plan for Throwing, and the Record Sheet. Similar tools are provided here, and you can use them in the same way. If you did not complete Lab Activity 6.1, read the introduction to that lab before working through this one. Note that the foot, trunk, and upper arm actions here are taken from the developmental sequence for throwing and the Observation Plan for Throwing.

Tennis ball
Racket of appropriate size for the selected individual
Instructions:
1. Start with the two strikers featured in the guided assessment videos, which will help you learn the process of identifying developmental levels. The questions in the guided video are the same questions in the observation and will prompt you to watch for the critical elements. Follow the Observation Plan for Sidearm Striking (below) and Observation Plan for Throwing (found in Lab Activity 6.1) to determine the striker’s level—first for leg action, then for trunk, backswing, humerus, and forearm actions.
2. Next, categorize strikers’ developmental levels on your own using the nonguided assessment videos. Follow the observation plan in order to determine the level of each thrower. Open the Record Sheet for this lab, which includes two columns dedicated to video assessments. Each column is used for one striker. Once you determine the level of a component action, place an X in the appropriate box in the striker’s column. You should have just one X per action.
3. The remaining columns in the record sheet can be used for live assessments or additional video clips. Your instructor will let you know which to do. In live assessments, you are responsible for giving instructions to the strikers. Direct them to strike at the target. Allow them to warm up before the assessment. You should observe them from two positions: side view (at a right angle) and front or rear view (directly behind
them). Have each striker perform at least three trials; you will probably need more trials for all of the level assessments.
4. For each trial, follow the Observation Plan for Sidearm Striking and Observation Plan for Throwing (found in Lab Activity 6.1) to determine the level of each striker. You might see strikers use different developmental levels during a trial or in different trials. If so, use the movement pattern you see most often (i.e., during most of the time or in two of three trials). Place an X on the corresponding line in the Record
Sheet for leg and arm action.
