Analysis of Florida’s Three Strikes Law and comparison with how it works or doesn’t work in Florida compared to another State with a similar law.

Part A: Thesis Statement
Draft the thesis statement for your research paper. Refer to the Week 1 instructional materials for guidance.
Part B: Locating Academic Sources
Locate three academic sources that you will use for your capstone research paper.
One source should describe or explain the history, purpose(s), goal(s) or effects of a specific policy or broader set of policies such as, the ‘War on Drugs’, the ‘Tough on Crime’ movement, or ‘Mass Incarceration.’
One source must address the scope of the problem that your policy or program is trying to fix (this might be similar to source #1); and
One source must be an empirical study that supports your thesis statement or is related to the policy area that you are investigating (for example, policing, sentencing, courts, corrections, or reentry).
For each academic source, paste its abstract and write 1 to 3 sentences describing how you might utilize the source for your capstone research paper.
Upload a Word (DOC or DOCX) file of Writing Assignment 1 to this dropbox by the due date.
TOPICS TO CHOOSE FROM
PRING B 2022 TOPICS FOR THE CAPSTONE RESEARCH PAPER
You may only choose one of the following topics for your paper and oral presentation (must
be the same topic). No other topics will be accepted. All topics require statistical data and
analysis of the data, as well as analysis of the policies that relate to your topic.
● Analysis of Florida’s Three Strikes Law and comparison with how it works or doesn’t work
in Florida compared to another State with a similar law. You may also address mandatory
minimum sentences in your paper. Your thesis and conclusion should address whether these
policies work to reduce crime and recidivism rates.
● Analysis of community policing and traditional policing, including the comparison of the
US and another country that uses community policing and the crime rates between the two
countries. Your thesis and conclusion should center around which policing works better to
reduce crime.
● Analysis of crimes committed by upper, middle, and lower socioeconomic
areas/members in the US. Note that this is not race based but socioeconomic based. Provide
an analysis of the most common types of crimes that are committed by members of each
socioeconomic class and an analysis of why certain crimes are committed in each area and
policies in place to prevent the crimes. Your thesis and conclusion should provide information
on what influences the types of crimes based on socioeconomic conditions.
● Analysis of the probation system and whether it deters repeat offenders and reduces
recidivism rates. Your thesis and conclusion should address whether the probation system
and policies regarding the probation system work to eliminate repeat offenders and should
or should not continue to be used as part of our CJ system.
● Analysis of the Second Amendment and policies in place to limit the Second Amendment
rights. Your paper must address both sides of the gun control argument and address the
amount of crime committed with handguns in the US compared to one other country that
allows citizens to have guns and to another country that does not allow citizens to have guns.
Your thesis and conclusion should address whether gun restrictions reduce crime rates in the
US.
● Analysis of due process and policies in place to protect the accused. Your paper must
address both sides of the due process argument and policies, as well as the interpretations
of the Due Process Clause of the US Constitution. Your thesis and conclusion should address
whether the due process helps protects defendants and if it is at the expense of victims.
● Analysis of the US Criminal Justice System. Your paper must address the three parts of
our Criminal Justice System and the policies within each part. Your thesis and conclusion
should address whether the present system in the US works to deter crime, protect victims,
protect the rights of Defendants, and punish offenders.
