Evaluate your own political socialization from early childhood to present.
Political Socialization is the process through which we acquire political knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. It begins in early childhood and continues throughout life. Political Socialization is NOT the same thing as individual socialization; do not write about being raised to work hard, tell the truth, etc.–this is about government and politics. After reading Chapter 6 (this is covered on pages 203-208 in the text), write a paper that is at least four developed paragraphs (approximately 400 words) in which you analyze your own political socialization. Keep in mind that your socialization process does not have to be one of participation and discussion of politics; in fact, it could be just the opposite. Your paper should be a well-developed essay and should include all of the following: 1) Describe your understanding of political socialization. 2) Identify primary (the most prominent) and secondary socializing agents (according to the textbook). 3) Evaluate your own political socialization from early childhood to present. This is the most important part of this paper–your story; it should include every aspect of how you learned/formed opinions about government and politics. This is a private paper so that you can be forthcoming; it should not be generic. In other words, if you were raised as a Democrat or a Republican, say that and explain why or show how your beliefs have evolved over time. If you attended public schools, you were socialized politically. Think about this. 4) What role has social media played in your political socialization? (if you get your news on Facebook, it is playing a role)
