Do X and Walker suggest anything about the significance of mothers and motherhood for a larger African American community?
Learning Goal: I’m working on a literature writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.Choose one of the following options:
Options:Write an essay comparing and contrasting the role of mothers in Malcolm X’s “Nightmare” and Alice Walker’s “In Search of Our Mothers’ Garden.” How does each writer represent their mother figure? What do they learn from their mothers? Do X and Walker suggest anything about the significance of mothers and motherhood for a larger African American community? Based on your interpretation of their work, what is the meaning of motherhood as X and Walker understand it?
Write an essay comparing and contrasting Toni Morrison’s “Recitatif” and Walter Mosley’s “Equal Opportunity.” Each story demonstrates how race-based assumptions prejudice characters and/or readers, influencing how the characters are treated or perceived. However, Morrison and Mosley use different creative strategies to highlight this occurrence. Your essay should explore the various ways both stories showcase the unstated influence of race within the plot and compare/contrast how each writer communicates their point. Why is the role of race largely downplayed or unspoken in these stories?
In addition to three full pages of text, you must include a Works Cited page for your texts (author’s name, title of work, and URL)Do not use secondary sources (online or otherwise). This is not a research paper: you are writing about the texts, using just your ideas, as well as the class lectures as a source for background information about the author/s, their thematic interests, and the periods or societies they represent. Don’t go online “just to get a few ideas”: that is a slippery slope which can often lead to AIV charges.
