choose any pericope in the SOM (Sermon on the mount)
The first stage of this assignment is to work closely with a particular text in the Sermon on the mount (Found in Matthew chapters 5-7 of the “New living Translation” Bible. You may choose any pericope in the SOM (Sermon on the mount), but remember, you will be relating that pericope to a particular audience/situation in your city (FRESNO, CA) today (ie homeless people, drug addicts, etc). Before you begin examining today’s social context, you will start by becoming thoroughly acquainted with the SOM pericope that you have chosen. That is, before asking what your pericope means for today, you will be investigating what it meant for its earliest audiences. To do this, you will be drafting an exegetical study of your chosen pericope. Use the guidelines below to create this study. This is not a formal paper in the sense that it has an arguable thesis. Rather, it consists of several probes that are intended to help you to explore various aspects of the passage. The completed study should be 4-5 pages, 12 point font, double-spaced (except for the outline, single-spaced) and should be submitted on Moodle no later than the beginning of class time on the day that it is due.
The full instructions are attached in the files and include a grading rubric, instructions straight from the syllabus and an example paper that this paper should emulate.
