Visual Epigraph: an image
• Title
• Visual Epigraph: an image, placed directly below the title, that resonates in some way with the
text under discussion (The Metamorphosis) and your short essay. Keep mind that rhetorically,
images can be documentary (record of events), didactic (explaining procedures, concepts, or
structure), and/or imaginative (evoking narrative or emotion). In terms of accompanying a text
images are often categorized as evocative or illustrative. Evocative images do not necessarily
“explain” the text, while illustrative images usually have a direct correlation to the text. For an
epigraph your choice might be either or a combination. The image can be a photo, a painting, a
still from moving pictures; you can draw something yourself.
