What do you think she means by “will you witness me?”

Learning Goal: I’m working on a english question and need guidance to help me learn. For our first project, you are working towards writing a narrative of your own. This assignment gives you the opportunity to think about how narratives work, how they can be powerful ways of communicating information, and what makes a good narrative. For this assignment, you will first watch this TED Talk. (Links to an external site.) Importantly, you only have to watch until 6:45 (when you hear applause from the audience). Before you watch, some context: the speaker is from Darfur, a region in western Sudan, in Africa, where a genocide has been taking place since 2003. Many people have been killed, many more have had to flee their homes and their country. The speaker tells a story, then performs a spoken poem. Watch the video, then answer the questions below. Step 1: Illustrate comprehensionWhy did the author speaker start writing poems?
What does she remember most about talking to her classmates about Darfur? What emotions does she feel when she thinks about telling her story?
What do you think she means by “will you witness me?”
What are some of the speaker’s memories (or things she describes) that stuck out to most? List at least 3.
Step 2: ReflectThink about how much you learned about this conflict from this short 6 min clip. Did you know about Darfur before this? What do you think is gained by learning this information as a story, from someone experienced it, rather than, say, being asked to read the Wikipedia page? Do you think that she would have been just as effective as a speaker if she had gotten up there and started explaining the history of the genocide, with all the facts and stastistics (instead of focusing on herself)?
What do you think would happen if everyone in the world heard stories from people like her, people who could tell us what they had personally experienced and are experiencing in Darfur? Do you think that would make a difference? Explain your reasoning.
What facts do you still want to know that the story didn’t answer?
Did you like it best when she told a story in a normal, conversational tone, or when she started telling her story in poetic form? Which did you think was more powerful and why? What do you think were the advantages/disadvantages of each?
