do you agree with the definition of two types of marketing deception?

Homework Assignments
1. In the Merritt/McCombs book, in chapter 2 the authors refer to Rosen’s work and the key questions he asks about the nature of journalism in our society. Regardless of whether your area is news, sports, entertainment or PR these questions matter to the heart of who we strive to be and the work we strive to accomplish. This discussion asks you to address your own ideas on “why do we need journalists? and “what do they stand for?” as well as the other related questions that Rosen (and the authors) begin to address. Please also watch the CSPAN panel discussion of journalists post 9/11 and the changing nature of public affairs reporting. Include in your post how these professionals answered these same questions. https://www.c-span.org/video/?168628-1/public-affairs-reporting
2. In chapter 11 the authors included an adapted list of rules (adapted for journalists) about the public’s engagement with issues of the day (they begin on page 96). The huge assumption is that of the informed citizen and there are ways to engage the public toward what we would consider civic engagement. However, there may be deeper issues on resolving the difference between an “observational” public (or even non-engaged) and what we hope we provide as journalists for the public. This discussion starts with how apt that assumption is; How might it change our role if there is a growing non-engaged or merely an observational audience of readers/viewers? Beyond your answer to that – identify which of the rules would fall into your top three and why?
3. This week (Jan 25-27) we reflect on the role of the public via journalism to wade through the morass of information and data and voices to determine truth. Please watch the Brown University webinar/panel discussion about journalism in the Trump era. What are the major themes that the panelists describe as challenges to being a political and public affairs reporter in the Trump era? Are there similar challenges in any administration and they just look different? Or were these unique challenges to a new season for political reporting? If it is a new season, how do we shift to meet the needs of the public and the political information they desire/need?

1. Based on Chapter 2 of Reading Storynomics, do you agree with the definition of two types of marketing deception? Have you experienced them?
2.
One of the goals of the class is to identify great stories in different fields. For this purpose, students will need to find examples of great stories taking place in different areas. We will share them in class and I will put together a brochure with all the recommendations at the end of the semester. It’s not about finding the best in each genre but trying to find language to help us explain why stories matter to us. Include the link to the artist’s website, or a YouTube video and write 50-100 words explaining why this is such a great example. Don’t forget to explain why your choice is a great story, don’t just describe the artifact.
Ex. Prado Museum in Madrid. It’s one of the largest art museums in the world, and it has a ton of great art. They redesigned their website https://www.museodelprado.es/en, and it’s clean, easy to use, visual, and appealing. They recently launched a children’s museum version in the videogame Animal Crossing. It’s functional: easy to buy tickets, access info about the museum, and the museum shop is modern, vibrant, and attractive. Fun fact: they have Leonardo’s copy of the Mona Lisa (he painted two, the one in Paris and the copy). And it’s hidden in a corner.
