For this project, you will choose a scene from “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family and a quote from “Hegemonic Masculinity and Black Gender Ideology” by Patricia
Hill Collins or “Composing Gender” by Rachael Groner and John O’Hara, A Bedford Spotlight Reader to analyze the genre conventions of gender in the scene. You should use intersectionality as a lens to understand how identities intersect and interact with gender in the scene.
The purpose of this project is to understand how genre can aid
us in posing a research question and hypothesis, engaging in
analytical reading using rhetorical skills, and using secondary
research as evidential support to come to a conclusion.
