Which program or legislation would you have postponed because of the cost to the government over the long term?
The Great Depression had an impact on the world economy as much as it did the economy of the United States, not unlike the economic downturn in 2008 that started in the U.S. and rippled globally. In both instances, artificial values of trading securities led to a very large gap between true value and paper values. The resulting legislation and controls from Roosevelt’s New Deal have had lasting impacts on America today, including adding programs that are considered sacrosanct, such as Social Security, a federal tax on employers and employees at over 6% that would be virtually impossible to get passed in the current political climate.
In your main post, discuss some of the uses of radio and television that tried to influence the political landscape of American society in the 1930’s and then again in the 1970’s. How did the focus of “activism” change from the 1930’s to the 1970’s in terms of causes for protest? What were the similarities and differences between how Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were drawn into international armed conflicts?
Interact with the classmates about the positive and negative outcomes associated with the New Deal and Second New Deal. Which program do you believe was the most important and why? Which program or legislation would you have postponed because of the cost to the government over the long term?
