what are some factors that you believe should be considered when a player is contemplating retirement?
Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn. This past weekend it was announced that allegedly Tom Brady, “The greatest NFL player of all time is calling it a career.” While Brady has not confirmed this, nor have the Buccaneers received an official announcement of this from him, many sources close to Brady are stating that he will be pursing retirement from football in the near future. Please review the article linked below.https://www.nfl.com/news/buccaneers-qb-tom-brady-retiring-from-nfl-after-22-seasons (Links to an external site.) Tom Brady is ranked number 1 in NFL history in passing yards, completions, passing attempts, passing TD’s, starts, QB wins, pro bowl nods, and super bowl MVP’s. These records are off the charts and is truly the work of the greatest to do it. I’m not going to lie to you, back in the day I used to be a hater because I didn’t care for the Patriots but he truly gained my respect over that last couple of years when he made the transfer to Tampa Bay and won a super bowl. While we are hearing all of this rumor that Tom is going to retire after this season, I do not believe for a second that it is actually going to happen. The reason I think this is because he just got bounced from the playoffs, which I believe is plenty enough reason for him to come back and try to end on a super bowl win. The next thing is the fact that he finished number 1 in passing yards and TD’s. This is incredible that he is 44 years old and still leading the league in two of the biggest categories for a QB. He also finished 2nd in QBR. Normally when athletes try to determine when they should retire, the signs are obvious such as wear and tear on the body or decrease in ability to get the job done. Tom Brady has obviously shown the his “old” age is not getting to him at all, if anything, its somehow making him throw up record numbers. If you love a sport with your whole heart and you still had the ability to be one of the best, would you ever stop? At this point, we just wait and see what the man himself has to say about his future in the NFL.ESPN Internet Ventures. (n.d.). Tom Brady stats, news, bio. ESPN. The article, “Is He Retiring? Tom Brady Delivers a Tough Message About His Future”, talks about how there is a good chance Tom Brady is close to retirement. There can be many reasons as to why someone might want to retire from the NFL. In this specific article, it states that Tom Brady believes he needs to retire because he wants to be a better husband to his wife and a better father to his children. Being in the NFL takes up the majority of a person’s time which means the player’s free time is very limited. I believe it is time for Tom Brady to retire because of how many seasons he has already played and he needs to spend more time with his family. Tom Brady is also 44 years old which is pretty old to still be playing professional football. As Tom Brady gets older he could be at a higher risk of getting seriously hurt. There are many players each year that get seriously hurt. In the article, “NFL or Not For Long? Transitioning out of the NFL”, explains how often players have to stop their football career short because of an injury. Many players get concussions and other injuries on an ongoing basis. The concussions that these NFL players get can lead to horrible brain injuries that permanently affect them for the rest of their lives. This is one major factor I believe players should take into consideration when retiring. Another factor I think NFL players should take into consideration is the salary they are losing. NFL players get paid a lot of money to play football and when a player retires, they need to think about the financial effects it could potentially have on them if they have not saved or are prepared to lose that income.Translated by Content Engine, L. I remember when I was in kindergarten watching Brady in Super Bowl XXVIII in 2004. I grew up watching him play. When it was first reported that Tom Brady was retiring he had not made an official statement on the topic. As much as I would like to see Brady playing next year, I wasn’t surprised by the rumors of his retirement. Since then Brady has officially announced his retirement via Instagram. Brady stated that his commitment to football was a large one, and he was not ready to commit to playing anymore. I believe that his commitment to the game and his competitiveness took away from his family life. At this stage in the game Brady has won 7 Super Bowls (6 with the New England Patriots and 1 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), is a 5x Super Bowl MVP, all-time leader in passing yards, all-time leader in wins, all-time leader in passing touchdowns, and all-time leader in Pro Bowls. And with all that being said, there are still more accolades he has earned in his football career. Tom Brady is no doubt the best quarterback in the last 20 years, and arguably the greatest of all time. In my opinion, he has nothing left to prove competitively. Although it is a little bit sad, I am glad Tom Brady can now focus on other things and spend more time with his family.I think Tom Brady’s decision to retire now is a good one. Although his skill or ability has not faded yet, Tom Brady is 44 years old, and football is a very rough sport, so there is always a chance of serious injury. I am glad to see Brady retire before an injury forced him into retirement.https://www.buccaneers.com/news/tom-brady-career-stats-records-bucs-quarterback (Links to an external site.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZKiAj9J8pJ/?utm_medium=copy_link (Links to an external site.)
