A critical analysis is a discussion of how the author has used the various elements of style in order to create his or her theme or statement. The theme is the main idea the author is trying to get across. For example, in his short story “Cask of Amontillado,” Poe is presenting us with the workings of a morbid and vindictive person as he gets revenge on someone who has offended him. Poe develops this theme through the use of the following elements of fiction:
Symbolism: The journey into the catacombs becomes a symbol for the intricate and mad workings of the mind of the narrator. Fortunato’s costume is that of a “fool.”
Setting: The story takes place in a setting of tombs, skulls, eerie darkness. It is the carnival season when “madness” pervades the atmosphere.
Point of View: Poe uses the first person narrator point of view. We are able to follow the deranged thoughts of the protagonist, to actually “hear” what he is thinking as he thinks it. This gives us an immediacy that other points of view would not permit
Character: Poe creates in the character of his protagonist, an intelligent, plotting, and ultimately amoral sociopath. Fortunato, the victim, is presented as gullible, ingenuous, and the perfect foil for Montressor.
Plot: The plot is organized as a sequence of events that took place in the past. The conflict is between Montressor and Fortunato.
Irony: The story is replete with verbal, situational and dramatic irony. As Fortunato ingenuously follows his host for a sample of wine, he gets ever closer to his own demise. This is situational irony. We see verbal irony in a couple of instances when the protagonist suggests they turn back, knowing Fortunato will resist. Fortunato’s name is verbal irony because he is anything but “fortunate.” Dramatic irony is evident in the fact that both the reader and the storyteller are aware of Fortunato’s fate, but he himself is not.
Your Essay: Write a critical analysis of one of the stories listed above. Begin by discussing the story’s theme. The theme is the statement that the author is making through his or her fiction. For example in Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado” the theme has to do with madness and revenge. You might say something like the following: In his story “Cask of Amontillado, Poe portrays the mental workings of a madman as he exacts revenge upon his enemy.” You would then show how the elements of the symbol, setting, character, plot development, irony and point of view are used to develop this theme. Do the same with your own essay. Your essay should be a minimum of 750 words and a maximum of 1000 words. You will be evaluated on critical thinking, your understanding of the story, and your writing. Writing includes grammar, usage, organization, thesis, topic sentences, and conclusion. NOTE: Make sure that this is your own work. Avoid using ideas and/or text material from outside sources. Review plagiarism definitions in the course syllabus and in the student handbook.
