What is your initial reaction to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study?
(HOMEWORK) MINI-RESEACRH PROJECT 1 GUIDELINES
Step 1: Make sure that you have reviewed the following materials:
Chapter 1 from our textbook (pp. 53-55)
Research Ethics (short video)
Principles and Guidelines for Ethical Research and Evaluation in Development (short video)
American Sociological Association Code of Ethics
I recommend that, for the purpose of this assignment, in the ASA Code of Ethics document, you only review the ASA ethical principles explained on pages 5 and 6. These principles include: professional competence, integrity, professional responsibility, respect for people’s rights, dignity, and diversity, social responsibility, and human rights.
ASA Code of Ethics
Tuskegee Syphilis Study (short video)
Step 2: In your paper, address the following questions:
What is your initial reaction to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study? How it could have happened? Do you think it could happen again?
How were the Tuskegee victims deliberately misinformed about the nature of the study in which they were participants? If informed consent had been obtained by the researchers, would this have removed all of the questions about whether or not the study was ethical?
Review the six principles of the American Sociological Association Code of Ethics. Explain how the Tuskegee Study failed to conform to these principles. Discuss at least two (2) of the six.
NOTE: This paper will be graded out of 10 points. In your writing, make sure that you use and apply your sociological perspective and include concepts and key words from the readings and other course materials. Please consult the Syllabus for research mini-projects general guidelines.
Please save your work in Rich Text Format (RTF) or doc, docx, pdf formats before you submit it. Make sure to always save a copy of your work on your own computer.
Papers must be submitted only via D2L into the corresponding assignment folder on the due date (please see the Schedule in the Syllabus). If a paper is not submitted via D2L, it cannot be graded, and a grade of zero will be recorded. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME YOUR PAPERS, EXCEPT FOR THE SITUATION OUTLINED IN THE SYLLABUS.
Your paper should be 1.5 – 2 pages long (3-5 college-level paragraphs, each consisting of 3-5 sentences), double-spaced, font 12, standard margins, Times New Roman. Please proof-read, double-check the spelling of the key sociological terms, and edit. Your first and last name should be in the upper-left corner. Avoid “spacing tricks” (font larger than 12, wider margins, boldfaced and underlined titles, extra-long introductions, irrelevant deviations, etc.).
